Busby Family Cemetery

Located on Busby property (in 1986) on the north side of Newell Road, west of Baldwin Road.  T3S, R9W, Sec. 10.  Taken from page 58 of the old DeSoto cemetery book.  This cemetery would better be named the Shannon/Turner Family Cemetery based on the families buried therein.  Additional information added by Tim Harrison.



Emma Shannon Turner – 23 Feb 1863 – 21 Aug 1919.
Born in DeSoto County, Mississippi, the daughter of James D. Shannon (b. @1811, GA) and Sallie Adams (b. @1824, GA).  Family listed in the 1850 (p. 322) and 1870 (p. 225) DeSoto Census records.  She married Norfleet Blount Turner (see below) August 21, 1900.  It was the first marriage for both.  They are listed in the 1910 DeSoto Census (p. 168).  They had no children.  She died in Memphis, TN of appendicitis.

Norfleet Blount Turner – 21 June 1848 – 1 Oct 1910.
Born in Mississippi.  His mother’s name was Martha (b. 1823, VA).  His father, unknown, died prior to 1858 and was also from Virginia.  His mother re-married to James D. Nichols on August 5, 1858.  The family is listed in the 1860 DeSoto Census (p. 86).  Norfleet’s siblings were: S. E. (f) (1844, VA), C. S. (f) (1846, VA), Rosa B. (1850, MS), and E. B. (m) (1853, MS).  In the 1900 DeSoto Census (p. 177B), he is living with his brother, Edd, and is listed on the same page as Emma Shannon (see above).  He was a Confederate soldier, serving in Forrest’s cavalry.

Georgia Shannon Newell – 2 Dec 1849 – 19 Feb 1908.
Mary Georgia Shannon was born in DeSoto County, Mississippi, the daughter of James D. Shannon and Sallie Adams.  She married Silas B. Newell (b. 1832, NY) on April 10, 1870 in DeSoto County.  They had no children.  She is listed as Mary Newell in the 1870 DeSoto Census (p. 225) in the household of her parents, and is listed with her husband, his son, and three of her siblings in the 1880 DeSoto Census (p. 529D).  He is believed to have died in Memphis, TN in December 1881.  She is listed in the 1900 DeSoto Census (p. 177) as a widow.  Living with her are two sisters and nieces and nephews.

Sallie Shannon Odom – 12 Aug 1864 – 11 June 1941.
Born in DeSoto County, Mississippi the daughter of James D. Shannon and Sallie Adams.  She married (first) G. W. Thomas, on May 8, 1891.  They had six children: Nellie (1892), George (1893), Fay (1895), Josie (1896), Hobson (1898) and Mary (1899).  She is listed in the 1900 Census living with her widowed sister, Mary G. Newell (see above).  She married (second) Charles Odom (b. 1864, MS).  It was the second marriage for both.  The two are listed in the 1910 Shelby County, TN census (p. 159) along with her children.  Sallie and Charles had no children.  Charles died prior to 1930.  She died in Memphis, TN.

G. W. Thomas – 22 Feb 1859 – 14 Feb 1900.
Son of Green (b. 1833, TN) and N. E. (b. 1834, GA) Thomas in DeSoto County.  He is listed with them in the 1860 DeSoto Census (p. 39), along with siblings M. A. (f) (1855, MS) and J. H. (m) (1857, MS).  Married Sallie Shannon (see above) in 1891.  Was the father of six children.  His father, Green Thomas, was a Confederate soldier, serving in Co. H/D, 5th Mississippi Cavalry.
