Original Land Patent Purchasers. Range 6-E, 1823 to 1907

I hope that users of this data base will find valuable information which will aid them in their genealogical research. I have found it very useful in helping me to understand exactly where in Franklin County my ancestors lived. Also, I can better understand the relationships and family names because of the close proximity of other families.

All of the information which makes up this data base is readily available at the Bureau of Land Management - Eastern States, General Land Office site at <http://www.glorecords.blm.gov>. I encourage users to verify and expand this information by visiting this excellent genealogical site.

I have tried to use the exact spelling of names as they are recorded on the Original Land Patents. As with any endeavor of this nature there are probably transcription errors, but again, all information can be verified at the GLO site.

The information is arranged in the following manner:

AREA

Range, Township, Section—Each township is composed of 36 sections. Each section is composed of 640 acres and is one mile square.

LAND PATENTS

When states were admitted to the United States they gave all unclaimed land to the government. This land was then sold and the proceeds were used to fund the U. S. Treasury. The land was transferred by original land patent to the original purchaser. Subsequent sales are recorded in county probate offices. Section 16 in each township was returned to the states and the money from its sale was used to build schools. Therefore, section 16 in each township is called the "school section’ and records for sales in this section should be in the probate office.

NAMES

Names are listed as they are spelled. Some are obviously the same person(Godbold, James-Godbolt, James) but others may or may not be the same person(Lazarus, Nicholas R.-Lazarus, Nicholas).

DATES

The dates shown are the signature dates on the land patents as reported by the GLO. When different individuals made purchases in the same section, all dates are shown. However, an individual could have made more than one purchase in any one section in any given year and only one date will be shown. The actual purchase was often made several years before the signature date.
