Notes and Additions, WPA History Of Lamar County

I have received several inquiries about supposed errors in the WPA history.  The material was written in the 1930s.  I did not write it.  It is presented here as it was written.  On this page I will post information I receive regarding the WPA History if the information is pertinent and is accompanied with references to documentation.  If you want me to post something on this page you must be willing to have your e-mail address posted with it.

James Luper
While looking over the Lamar county web site I found my great grandfather listed on your Civil War page.  You have his date of death as 14 July 1864.  For the past four years I have researched the Luper family and find that this is the most common date used as his death date.  However I have found CSA records at the MS Dept. of Archives and History that says he was captured on this date by the Union Army.
Records show James joined Co. I, 38th MS Cav. at Columbia on March 25, 1862.  He was captured by Union troops at Harrisburg ( now Tupelo ), MS on 14 July 1864.  James was a POW and in custody of the Provost Marshall in LaGrange, TN on 22 July 1864 and was sent from there to Alton Military Prison in Alton, IL.  He arrived there on 27 July 1864.  Records show he was sent to hospital on 4 Dec. 1864 and died there on 9 Dec. 1864.  Cause of death was listed as diarrhea.  He is buried in North Alton. IL Confederate Cemetery in plot 101.  The Alton Confederate Cemetery web page lists James A. Luper from MS as being buried there.  His wife Mary must have been told he was killed on 14 July 1864.
On Aug. 22, 1916 Mary applied for a pension for her husbands service in the Civil War.  On the application she said James was killed at Harrisburg, MS on 14 July 1864.  The application was filed at the Chancery clerks office in Lamar county, MS.  The application was witnessed by J. J. Hodges and J. E. Bounds.
I hope you can change his date of death on you web page.
Thanks,
Lavelle Luper
