About Richard Gideon's marker: The Aberdeen Examiner's June 27, 1957 issue gives some history about this marker. The DAR purchased the marker about 30 years prior to this issue of the paper; however, they had been unable to locate the grave until Dr. Jim Riley of Greenwood Springs with the assistance of Miss Lucille Peacock's research located the grave in this then abandoned cemetery. The marker was unveiled on the 192nd anniversary of the Patriot's birth. New research calls into question the identity of this as the Patriot born in 1765. The discrepancy is based on the birth of Catherine Gideon Wise in 1775. Catherine is believed to be the daughter of the Richard buried in Center Cemetery. The Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution by Bobby Gilmer Moss (Baltimore: Genealogical, 1983) gives Richard's birth date as 20 June 1765 and his death date as 7 November 1834.
