ATLEE ARMISTICE SMITH SR.

QUITMAN -- Services for Atlee "Double A" Armistice Smith Sr. will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at Bucatunna Baptist Church with the Revs. Buddy Braddock and Ronnie Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Bucatunna Cemetery. Wright's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 
 

Mr. Smith, 77, of Quitman, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at his home. He was a veteran of World War II and received a medal for faithful service. He was a loyal member and deacon of Bucatunna Baptist Church. Mr. Smith was a faithful, loving husband and daddy, a man of integrity, well respected and faithful to his Lord. He now abides in Heaven with Jesus, his savior. 
 

Survivors include his wife, Dartha Smith of Quitman; two daughters, Diane Crane and her husband, Malcolm and Jean Williams and her husband, Wayne, all of Stonewall; a son, Atlee Smith II and his wife, Sharon Faye of Quitman; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. 
 

He was preceded in death by a son, John Mark Smith; four brothers; and three sisters. 
 

His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. 
 

ALTON J. ALAWINE

Services for Alton J. Alawine will be held today at 2 p.m. at Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Carl Stephens and John Kaufman officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Cemetery. 
 

Mr. Alawine, 85, of Meridian, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at The Specialty Hospital of Meridian. A Methodist, he was a graduate of George Washington University. He held a Doctor of Law degree and was retired from the Internal Revenue Service after 35 years. 
 

Survivors include his wife, Margie Alawine of Meridian; a son, David Alawine of Spotsylvania, Va.; a stepson, Kenneth Lee and his wife, Josie Moody, of Vicksburg; two daughters, Deborah Hahn of Richmond, Va., and Sheila Hutchens of Alexandria, Va.; a stepdaughter, Diane Forbes and her husband, Frank, of Sherwood, Ark.; 25 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Will Alawine and his wife, Barbara, of Vernon, Ala.; two sisters, Kate Alawine and Ellen Stephens and her husband, the Rev. Carl Stephens, all of Collinsville; and former stepchildren, Blaine Toney of Spotsylvania, Terry Toney of Clear Creek, W.V., and Donna Smith of Dale City, Va. 
 

He was preceded in death by three sons, Russell Alawine, Alton Alawine Jr., and an infant son; and a brother, J.T. Alawine. 
 

Pallbearers will be Malcolm Threatt, Billy Alawine, Max Alawine, David Sessums, Ronnie Alawine and Larry Joyner.

Mrs. Pace, 93, of the Bailey Community, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Beverly Health Care Center. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church. 
 

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Nicholson Norris and her husband, A.V., of Meridian; four sons, Jimmie Pace and his wife, Bessie, of Hernando, Milton Pace and his wife, Joyce, of Meridian, Billy Pace and his wife, Lou, of Forest and Jack Pace and his wife, Mary Lou, of Bailey; a sister, Pauline Harbour of DeKalb; a brother, Elmon Moore of Meridian; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Moore of Bailey; her grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several other friends and loved ones. 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband, L.D. Pace; two daughters, Wilma Orgeron and Sara Caldwell; a son, James Roy Pace; two grandsons, Mike and William Pace; and two granddaughters, Betty Pace and Maurine Bateman. 
 

The family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society. 
 

Pallbearers will be Jackie Pace, Wayne Hurtt, Larry Bateman, Johnny Cook, Jeff Pace and George Ranager. 
 

Honorary pallbearers will be Skip Sockwell, Tommy Hurtt, Scott Pace, Calvin McMillan, Doug Mahan and Bernice Davis.

Mr. Harrison died Monday, April 8, 2002, in Cleveland.

Mrs. Villavaso, 97, of Meridian, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. 
 

Survivors include a son-in-law, F.J. "Jerry" Rein of Brookhaven; a grandson, F. Joseph Rein Jr. and his wife, Alice W. Rein; two great-grandsons, William Joseph Rein and Richard Watkins Rein, both of Ridgeland; a sister-in-law, Grace Ferguson of Meridian; and a sister, Inez Patterson of Jacksonville, Fla. 
 

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nell Y. Rein.

Mr. Keely, 17, of Meridian, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, in Meridian. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and a senior at West Lauderdale High School. He played soccer at West Lauderdale and had signed with Meridian Community College for 2002-2003. 
 

Survivors include his parents, Randy and Dana Keely; a sister, Charity Keely; and a brother, Chase Keely, all of Meridian; his maternal grandparents, Dan and Faye Houston of Collinsville; his paternal grandparents, Sam and Barbara Keely of Meridian; two aunts, Jill Williams and her husband, Joe, of Collinsville and Robin Crouch of Pearl; and several cousins, Lydia and Blaine Crouch of Pearl and Matt and Hailey Williams of Collinsville.

Mr. Lewis, 79, of Rose Hill, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Heartfelt Hospice in Meridian. He was a retired Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a cattle farmer and also worked with Lockheed at the Air Guard Base in Meridian and with project engineers in Jasper County. 
 

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Lewis; a daughter, Paula Jo DuBose and her husband, Richard, of Rose Hill; a granddaughter, Traci Decker of Brandon; a grandson, Sam DuBose of Rose Hill; and two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Drew Decker of Brandon. 
 

Pallbearers will be Vernon Decker, Glen Lewis, Johnnie Chatham, Frankie Morgan, Jimmy Chatham and Marvin Lewis.

Mrs. Peterman, 81, of Meridian, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. She was a retired employee of East Mississippi State Hospital. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. 
 

Survivors include her sons, Wayne Garratt and his wife, Carolyn, of Meridian, Greg Garratt and his wife, Linda, of Pearl; daughters, Wanda McKenzie of Meridian, Debbi McKinney and her husband, Gerald, of Fort Mills, S.C.; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 
 

She is preceded in death by a son, Leroy Garratt.

NEW ORLEANS -- Graveside services for James V. Carden Jr. will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Magnolia Cemetery. Bultman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 
 

Mr. Carden, 65, of New Orleans, died Sunday, April 14, 2002. He was a native of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and a retired engineer with George Koch and Sons of Evansville, Ind., where he worked for more than 20 years. He was a graduate of Purdue University and did post graduate work at Auburn University. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was an airman first class. He was a board member for Mobile AIDS Support Services.

Miss Ogburn, 91, of Meridian, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Queen City Nursing Home. She was a graduate of Blue Mountain College and Woman's Missionary Training School in Louisville, Ky. 
 

In 1940 she was appointed by the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention as a missionary to Chile, where she served for 36 years. She was the organizer and first director of the Women's Bible Institute in Santiago and then became executive director of the Baptist Women's Missionary Union of Chile. 
 

In April 1976, Miss Ogburn was awarded the Bernardo O'Higgins Award for her work she did with women and youth in Chile. This is the highest award given by the Chilean government to one who is not a citizen of that country. 
 

Survivors include several nieces, nephews and friends. 
 

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Julia Ogburn; two brothers, Alex and Georgia Jr.; and three sisters, Mrs. Ross, Mrs. Roy Thrash and Eleanor Green.

He served as past director of Humphrey Park.

Mr. King, 62, of Brookhaven, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. He was a superintendent for Brookhaven Parks and Recreation. 

Mr. King was a graduate of Delta State University. He was an active deacon and Sunday School teacher at Easthaven Baptist Church. His strong faith often carried him through adversities and tragedies about which he never complained. 

He worked 36 years as superintendent for Brookhaven Parks and Recreation. As a long-standing community volunteer, he coached peewee football, little league baseball, and served in many civic clubs and organizations. 

He devoted 26 years to ASA softball as district commissioner and 30 years to the Southwest Mississippi Football Officials Association. 

Mr. King's love for and commitment to young people was the basis for his tireless work in helping to establish one of the finest parks and recreation departments in Mississippi as well as Brookhaven's state of the art sports complex. 

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and he shared the bounty through cooking competitions, church gatherings, or just with friends which included just about everyone he encountered. 

Hansel was a wonderful friend, a devoted husband and a loving father. He was an ideal and a model of all that is good and decent and worthwhile. 

Survivors include his wife Mary Lou Jones King of Brookhaven; one daughter, Louann King of Las Vegas; three brothers, Loyd "Red" King of Liberty, Jerry King of Sumrall, and Sam King of Madison; one sister, Ginger Randazzo of Amite County; and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loyd King and a son, Wayne King.

Mrs. Minette, of Mobile, died Friday, April 19, 2002, in Mobile. She was a retired teacher with the Choctaw County School System. 
 

Survivors include her daughter Jane Roselind and her husband Robert Reeve of Mobile and a brother, Fagan Scott of New Orleans, La. 
 

The family requests that memorials be made to the Alabama Sheriff's Boys and Girls Ranch or to the United Methodist Children's Home.

Mrs. Scoggin, 87, of Decatur, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at her home. She was a retired L.P.N. nurse at Hilltop Manor and was a native of Lincoln County. 
 

She was a member of Midway Baptist Church, a Daughter of the American Revolution and a member of the Homemakers Club. 
 

Survivors include her two daughters, Sander Fisher and her husband Johnny Mack of Carthage, Ava Clardy and her husband Glen of Pascagoula; three sons, Charles Scoggin and his wife Lee Ann of Newton, Clark Scoggin of Decatur and Robert Scoggin and his wife Sonia of Bay Springs; four sisters, Helland Smith of Magnolia, Willie Nell Davis of Vancleave, Betty Ardis of Kokomo and Ruby Harvey of Osyka; and 12 grandchildren. 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Donald Scoggin; a son, James (Jim) Scoggin; her parents, James Clifton and Martha McCullough Coghlan. 
 

The family requests that memorials be made to Midway Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 11582 Highway 15, Newton, MS 39345. 
 

Pallbearers will be John Fisher, Matt Scoggin, Chris Clardy, Trey Clardy and Luke Scoggin.

Mrs. Stewart, 88, of Meridian, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, in Heidelberg. She was a member of the Carver School foster grandparent program. 
 

Survivors include her sister, Lucy Jane Young of Meridian; one sister-in-law, Lucy Lewis of Tulsa, Ok.; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband and five siblings. 
 

Visitation will be today between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the E.E. McDonald Community Chapel in Meridian.

Mrs. Rhodes, 87, of Meridian, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Rush Foundation Hospital. 
 

Mrs. Rhodes was a member of Duffee Baptist Church where she taught children's school for 62 years and was the church clerk for 30 years. She served many years as director of W.M.U. and Discipleship director and vacation Bible school director. 
 

She started and directed the Duffee Senior Citizens Club, wrote Duffee news for the Newton Record and the Union Appeal newspapers. She was also the 4-H Club leader for more than 25 years and president of Suqualena School Reunion for more than 15 years. 
 

Survivors include her son, Ken Rhodes and his wife Elaine of Jackson; a daughter, Beverly A. Rhodes of Meridian; two grandchildren, Chris Rhodes and his wife Laurie of Petal and Sheri Engle and her husband Stephen of Purvis; three great grandchildren, Olivia Rhodes, Adam and Jacob Engle; two sisters, Julia Alice Smith and Nannie Mae McCann, both of Meridian; one brother, Robert Earl McCann of Horne Lake. 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Purvis Rhodes.

Mrs. Thornton, 17, of Carthage, died Friday, April 19, 2002, on Highway 486 in Philadelphia. She was a teacher with the Head Start program. 
 

Survivors include her husband Matthew Thornton of Carthage; mother, Ludy Turnage of Collinsville; father, William Cumberland of Collinsville; a sister, Rachel Williams of Carthage; a brother, William Stevens of Philadelphia; and grandmother, Johnnie Virginia Booker of Collinsville.

Mr. Crain, 83, of Cuba, Ala., died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Rush Foundation Hospital. He was a carpenter with the paper mill. 
 

Survivors include his wife, Louise B. Crain of Cuba; a son, Norman W. Crain of Meadville; a daughter, Margaret Beard of Cantonment, Fla.; two sisters, Eloise Doster of Kingsland, Ark., and Jean Jones of Fordyce, Ark.; and four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Sulphur Springs Baptist Church and a member of OES Chapter 168. Mrs. Leach spent her life helping others.
