BUTLER, Ala. -- Services for Susie Kate Gibson will be held today at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Bonner officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Gilbertown. Bumpers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 
 

Ms. Gibson, 81, of Butler, formerly of Gilbertown, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Willow Trace Nursing Home. 
 

Survivors include her brother, Tobia Gibson of Rock Springs, Ala.; sisters, Doris Lisenbe of Bailey, Miss., and Claire Ozment of Livingston, Ala.; and 16 nieces and nephews. 
 

Visitation will be today one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Herrington, 80, of Union, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. He was retired from La-Z-Boy South and was a deacon at County Line Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. 
 

Survivors include his wife, Lorene Herrington of Union; a son, Albert Herrington and his wife, Gail, of Meridian; a granddaughter, April Bush and her husband, Jamey, of Meridian; a grandson, Adam Herrington and his wife, Nicole, of Meridian; great-grandchildren, Abby Grace Bush and Jordan Herrington of Meridian; two sisters, Elma Smith of Union and Mae Graham and her husband, Dock, of Decatur. 
 

He was preceded in death by a son, Milton Herrington; his parents, Mack and Susie Herrington; two brothers, Oscar and Wilbur Herrington; and a sister, Flora Herrington. 
 

Pallbearers will be Ivan Davis, Randy Harrison, Maxie Savell, Jerry Smith, Ray Sweat and David Winstead. 
 

Visitation will be today 6 p.m.- 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

KATHRYN GILES SCOTT 
 

YORK, Ala. -- Graveside services for Kathryn Giles Scott were to be held today at 10 a.m. at Clay Memorial Cemetery in Cuba. Bumpers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 
 

Mrs. Scott, 94, of Cuba, died Monday, July 22, 2002. She was born April 26, 1908, of early pioneer stock in Sumter County, Ala., and Lauderdale County, Miss. Her parents were Joel Hampton Giles of Cuba and Sarah Inez Temple of Bailey, Center Hill, Electric Mills, Scooba and the Shuck Town area. 
 

Her paternal great-grandfather, Nathaniel Greene Giles of Boligee, Ala., planter from Fayetteville, N.C. (1835), was Cuba's first postmaster in 1847. 
 

Her grandfather, John Hiram Giles, M.D., was one of Cuba's early physicians during and after the War Between the States. 
 

She went to school in Cuba and graduated from Livingston State Teacher's College (now UWA). In 1932 she married Lester Lee Scott of pioneer stock around the Scott Mountain and Rock Springs communities west of Riderwood, in Choctaw County, Ala., and the couple had two sons. 
 

She completed her bachelor's degree in history at Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham. First widowed in 1947, she continued to teach public school music at Gibson School in Birmingham for 21 years. 
 

In 1968, she married her second cousin, Alfred Corn of Meridian, and returned to Meridian. Corn died suddenly in 1970. 
 

In 1972 she married Paul K. Richie of Meridian and lived alternately in Meridian and Sun City, Ariz. Richie died in November 2000 at King's Daughters and Sons Nursing Home. 
 

Mrs. Scott pursued three great passions, exceptional performance on the piano from age 7, the love of her soul mate, Lester Lee Scott, the father of her children, and her two sons. She lived in hope of rejoining the love-of-her-life. 
 

Survivors include her sister, Frances Temple Giles McElroy of Cuba; her sons, David Giles Scott of Prescott, Ariz., and Joseph Lester Scott of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Wendy Scott Blakeslee of Aspen, Colo., Erin Leigh Scott of Tucson, David Scott Jr. of Phoenix, Brett Lester Scott of Tempe, Ariz., Lisa Sharon Gustas of Houston and Branwyn Kathlyn Walker of Tucson; six great-grandchildren, Brandon James Mazzola, Nicole Leigh Scott Mazzola, Andrew Campbell Scott, Samuel Hayden Blakeslee, Kathlyn Lee Walker and Brooke Ann Scott; a nephew, Harold Temple McElroy of Montecello; and three grand-nephews, several great-nephews and great-nieces; and many cousins in the Cuba and Meridian areas.

Services for Bernice Stewart will be held today at 11 a.m. at Barham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Jones officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. 
 

Mrs. Stewart, 83, of Meridian, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Heartfelt Hospice. She was a member of Highland Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class. She was a former member of Happy Highlanders Singing Group. 
 

Survivors include her sons, Jerry Stewart and his wife, Eileen, of Meridian and Dr. William Stewart and his wife, Sally, of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter, Betty Stewart Harper and her husband, Robert, of Shreveport, La.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Pat Leggett and his wife, Ethel, of Seminary, and William B. Leggett Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Seminary; two sisters, Betty Speed of Seminary and Margaret Tucker of Knoxville, Tenn. 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband, A.R. Stewart.

Mrs. Copeland, 53, of Philadelphia, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. She was a secretary for Philadelphia Utilities for the past 33 years. 
 

Survivors include her husband, Truitt "Nubbin" Copeland, a son, Dewayne Copeland, a granddaughter and a sister, Joy Seale, all of Philadelphia. 
 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mattie Ruth and Lacie Murphy.

Mrs. Dean, 89, of Little Rock, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at Laird Alliance Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Little Rock and a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church where she was active for many years. 
 

Mrs. Dean was known throughout the community all her life for nursing the sick. She had a God-given talent for taking care of people in need and gave of her energy wherever needed, even before studying to become a nurse. 
 

After her children moved away, she enrolled in nursing school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where she earned her degree as a licensed practical nurse. 
 

She worked there for many years. She also worked at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center and St. Dominic's Hospital. Later she moved to Meridian where she was employed at Rush Foundation Hospital. Before retiring she worked at Laird's Hospital and Nursing Home in Union. 
 

Her entire life was devoted to the sick, the suffering and the poor. She took great pride in her work and her children often referred to her as "Our Little Mother Teresa." 
 

Survivors include her sons, Clois Dean of Hattiesburg, Carl Dean of Little Rock and Darrell Dean of Union; a daughter, Peggy Brister of Biloxi; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. 
 

She was preceded in death by a son, Clifton Dean. 
 

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association and Diabetes Foundation. 
 

Pallbearers will be Joey Dean, Darrell Dean, Paul Dean, David Dean, Johnny Dean, Eagle Dean, and Phillip Dean.

WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Services for Lillian Margareth Southerland will be held today at 1 p.m. at Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Avery officiating. Burial will be in Pendleton Cemetery. 
 

Mrs. Southerland, 85, of Waxahachie, formerly of Meridian, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Baylor Medical Center in Ellis County, Texas. She was born Jan. 19, 1917, in DuQuoin, Ill., to Herbert J. and Zella Mae Foster McCullough. 
 

She was a National Debate Champion at DuQuoin High School. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1938. She was the music and educational director, and secretary at First Baptist Church in Temple. Mrs. Southerland was instrumental in rebuilding the church after a fire in 1939. 
 

She married Preston Jack Southerland on Oct. 29, 1940, and as a pastor's wife, was the music director for seven different churches. 
 

Her passion was reading and studying the Bible. She also taught speech and drama for 20 years in Stamford, Texas, and was especially fond of Shakespeare. 
 

Mrs. Southerland was an award winning theatre director and civic leader. She was selected as "Woman of the Year" in Stamford in 1990, and she was active in the Stamford Music Club. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, served as president of the Alumni Association of her graduating class, a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the International Thespian Society and Professional Mu Phi Epsilon Music Fraternity. 
 

She loved to travel all over the world and was a wonderful homemaker, hostess, mother, grandmother and friend. Her love and influence will continue for many generations to come. 
 

Survivors include her two daughters, Susan Bailey of Lake Tahoe, Calif., and Jacquelyn Avery and her husband, Tim, of Waxahachie; a brother, Harold Dean McCullough of Bryan, Texas; a sister, Jeanne Trumbull of Gainesville, Texas; grandchildren, Tishri Grace Bailey, Lisa Yvon Holm, Joel Brandon Avery and Taylor Jordan Avery; two great-grandchildren, Joshua Allen Holm and Rachel Christine Holm; and numerous nieces and nephews. 
 

She was preceded in death by husband of 32 years, Preston Jack Southerland; two sisters, Laura Lee McDurmon and Dorothy June Corzine.

Mrs. Spears, 94, of Philadelphia, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at her home. She was a homemaker. 
 

Survivors include two daughters, Wannee Kent of Vicksburg and Mollie Stokes of Philadelphia; two sons, Paul Spears and Matthew Spears, both of Philadelphia; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren. 
 

Visitation is from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
