The Cline Family

We know nothing earlier for Moses Cline or his Sparks/Word mother-in-law. Nannie Word Cline is descended from an earlier Charles Word who died on King's Mountain in the Revolution and there are a number of DAR members from him. Nannie's father died in Lowndes Co., MS.

Descendants of Moses Leonidas Cline

MOSES LEONIDAS CLINE was born August 16, 1811 in Concord, Cabarrus Co., North Carolina, and died March 09, 1893 in Brenham, Washington County, Texas. He married NANNETTE EMELINE WORD February 09, 1837 in Columbus, Lowndes County, Ms., daughter of CHARLES WORD and HENRIETTA SPARKS.

About 1900, Nannette Cline lived with her daughter, Sarah Chandler in Dallas, Texas. She gave this family history to her grandaughter, Emmie Chandler Milam. Copied by Mary Gunn Milam Vonder Hoya. Later dates were added by family members, probably Emmie. A copy is furnished by Janis Carnaham of Dallas.

Moses Leonidas Cline (grandpa) born in Concord, Cabanis Co. (Cabarrus) N. Carolina, Aug. 16th, 1811 - died March 9, 1893 in Brenham, Washington County, Texas, of Bright's Disease after a lingering illness lasting three months - during which time the suffering beyond expression, he showed forth his meekness and deep Christian spirit - He was a member of the M. E.
church, south, and had been since the age of 29.

Moses was married to Nannette Emeline Word, Thursday 8 p. m. at her home in Columbus, Miss, Feb 9th, 1837 - They lived together as loving and devoted helpmates 56 years and 1 month, becoming in that time the parents of 6 sons (and twin sons stillborn at maturity) and 3 daughters. They celebrated every anniversary, including their golden which was participated in by a host of relatives and friends in Brenham where they had lived many years - They moved from Columbus, Miss to Aberdeen, Miss latter part of the year 1845.

From there they went to Pickensville, Ala, Nov 1847. Lived there until 1855 when they moved to Macon, 1871 when they joined the pioneers who were leaving in numbers from the old states for Texas. They stopped for 6 months in Independence Washington Texas - where the first Baylor school was founded - Hearing much of the thriving town of Brenham, same county, they
located there, Dec. 31st, 1872, permanently, living there until Granpa's death - His body rest Prairie Lea Cemetery, in the town where he and Grandma were reverenced and loved by its people.

Nanette Emeline Word Cline, wife of M. L. Cline, was born in Elyton, since called Aberdeen Miss, Jefferson Co Ala, March 22nd 1820. After Grandpa's death she lived with her only living daughter (my mother) Mrs. Sarah Ellen Chandler, in Dallas, when she died at a ripe old age, and carried to Brenham (by Uncle Dave - D. A. Cline their 4th living son) and laid to rest by the
side of dear old Grandpa, whom she so pitifully missed for long years before she went to him. (April 29, 1905)

Grandma Cline's father's name was Charles Word. He was born May 16, 1791 at Salem N. Carolina, and died July 30th 1838 in Columbus Miss, of dropsey of the heart - He married Henrietta Sparks, who was born the same year he was, in Salem, N. C. also. Grandma Cline's half brother Davie was Cousin Lula Word Sloan's father. She still lives in Brenham, 1932.
