Every
genealogist knows the value of family Bible records. It is often the only
record of births and deaths of family members, and in many instances the only
record of marriages. With the record loss in 1882 in Pike County, no marriage
records are available before that date. Births and deaths were not required to
be registered in the state of Mississippi until 1912.
The Pike
County and Walthall County Bible Records Project is an effort to compile an
index to Bible records of Pike and Walthall families in order to make the
information available to researchers. Bible records of some Pike County and
Walthall County families have been published by the Mississippi Genealogical
Society and in other sources. Many Bible records are owned by descendants of
the Bible's original owners.
The chart
below lists both published and private Bible records of Pike County and
Walthall County families that I have compiled to date. Bibles are listed in
alphabetical order by the surname of the owner and an index
to the allied family names is also available .
Bible records published in the several
volumes of Mississippi Genealogical Society Bible and Cemetery Records are
abbreviated as MGS, followed by the volume number, in the table. Below the
Bible records list is a list of libraries
which have volumes of Mississippi Cemetery and Bible Records in their
collections. This list, primarily, is of libraries with online catalogs that
are indexed with the WordCat
web site. Undetermined is shown in the Volumes column if I was unable to
determine from the online library catalog which volumes were held in the
library's collection. As you will note, these volumes are in library
collections across the country. There are likely many more libraries with these
volumes in their genealogy collections.
