McVey, Moore, Purdon

My great,great-grandfather, Alexander McVey, is buried in Hopewell Cem in Pontotoc Co. He was married to Mary Moore and had I believe 4 offspring.

His oldest daughter was Elizabeth Jane McVey Purdon , who was also buried at Hopewell in 1929. I believe that one of his sons Silis Anderson McVey was buried there in 1875. I have not been able to make it to the cem to check this out. I can not trace Alexander back any further than when his first daughter was born in 1848. Anyone with these surnames, help, I will be happy to help in this line.

Thanks

McPherson, Adams

Hi. My name is Pamela McPherson Stanlick and I live in SE Kansas for quite some time I have been trying to locate info on my Great Grandfather and my Graet Uncle. We have access to an old family Bible that states they both married in Pontotoc County Mississippi on Dec 12 1866. Their names were L.A. McPherson and L.E. McPherson brothers they apparently married at the same time. I do know their mothers name was Hannah and she died in Pontotoc County June 27th 1881. We do have another refernce that indicate L.E. mothers name was Sarah Adams nad she died in Pontotoc County Feb 4th 1879 So we are confused. If you have any point of reference I might check please let me know. I am very new to geneology and I am finding it facinating, My parents live in Okla and are nearly 80 so I am trying to gather as much from them as I can

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you. Pam Stanlick

Duncan, Cole, Temple

John F. Duncan was my ggg-grandfather. He was born in SC about 1808. He was in Hardeman co. TN for a while and in AL for a short time, ending up in Pontotoc Co. MS possibly as early as 1840. He died in Pontotoc CO in 1880. He had three wives and about 23 children. My ggg-grandmother was Sarah Francis Cole. Their daughter E.M. Duncan was my gg-grandmother. I think her name was Elizabeth and was called Bettie. If anyone has any information or pictures of this family, please let me know. E.M. Duncan married my gg-grandfather Charles Temple in Pontotoc county in 1865. They had two girls in 1867 - Ella and in 1869 - Bettie. I cannot locate E.M. Duncan Temple in the 1870 census. I believe she may have died, but have no evidence. Charles and the girls are in TN in 1870.

I would appreciate any help you can give me with this family.

Bacon, Parks, Dickson, Harper

My ggrandfather was Waddy A. Bacon, born 1826 in Alabama. His father, Edmund Parks Bacon, died in Alabama in 1832. His mother, Harriet Taylor Bacon died in 1859 in Pontotoc County. I found Waddy on the 1850 and 1860 census in Pontotoc County married to Harriet Theresa Ann Harper and their children listed. Harriet Theresa Ann's sister, Samantha Harper was also living with them in the 1860 census. Waddy's older brother, William Henry, married Pauline Skinner and lived with his 8 children in one of the counties formed from Pontotoc. Their youngest son was named Waddy A. Bacon also. Waddy's sister Harriet Parks Bacon married Joseph Rainey Dickson. One of their daughters, Lela, was responsible for the information that started me on my genealogical quest. I do not have an address for her or here nieces. Waddy and his family left Mississippi when my grandmother was three months old to homestead in Florida and I have a lot of information from that time on. Waddy was a merchant in Tupelo, I believe, along with his older brother William Henry. I've also heard of a plantation on the Tombigbee River. Mary Laurinda Bacon Flint, the oldest of Waddy's children remained behind with her husband, a Dr. Flint, and their children. After Dr. Flint's death, Mary and the children joined the family in Florida. I have traced the Bacons back to their beginnings in Virginia in 1641 with Captain Edmund Bacon and tried this past summer to connect them in England. Unfortunately, in England, records are kept in the counties and the genealogy course I was taking with Elderhostel didn't allow for research except in a general way in London. If you had ancestors in Canterbury or Kent, you were in luck because we were there also. This Spring, I hope to come to Tupelo myself and see what I can find. I'd appreciate any hints or help anyone might have to help me. I didn't mean to be so long but I did flesh it out a bit in case something might ring a bell. I've had conflicting info on Waddy and I'd love to know the facts.

William A. Bailey

He married Elizabeth Jane Neal in Tippah in January 1859. They had five children by 1875 then I can't find them anymore the children were living with her father, Jeremiah Jefferson Neal in the 1880 census in Union County. What happened to this couple? Also who was his father? I have a copy of marriage license, the death certificate on one of the children( William James"Jim" Bailey). Jim and a sister( Nanny) never married. I know this is Pontotoc County but Union County was Pontotoc County at the time this couple disappeared.

Where I don't know?...They were listed in the Pontotoc County 1860 census living next door to a Charles Bland and family??, they were "also" listed in 1860 Calhoun County Census Sarepta Post Office. This I can understand because of the county lines in that area, I'm sure census just overstepped the boundaries.......Can anyone help?? Peggy

Ransom H. Brown and wife, Mariah/Maria (Lamar) Brown

>How can I prove they were ever in Pontotoc Co., MS? I believe that the problem may be that they were there after the 1850 census and were not there for the 1860 census. I do know that Mariah's brother, Thomas Lamar and family were there, so it makes sense to me that she and her family went there also - from DeKalb Co., Alabama. If not, I don't know how or why my great grandmother, Mary Undine Brown (the oldest child of Ransom and Mariah), would have been there to meet her husband - my great grandfather, Joab Johnson. Mary and Joab married in Pontotoc Co. in July of 1858. By 1860, they were in Neshoba Co. with one child - my grandfather, John R. Johnson. Living right next door, was Ransom H. Brown - Mary's father, and his new wife, Jane, and the rest of his children. Apparently, Mariah had either died while in the Pontotoc area - between 1850 and 1860, or she died in route to Neshoba Co. I can't prove any of this except for Mary and Joab's marriage certificate, which I have a copy of. Any suggestions from anybody? I contacted Hazle Neet and she did a little research, but only came up with a Ransom Brown with wife, Mary and children on the 1860 Attala Co., MS census - P. O. Rocky Point, and the ages were all wrong. Ransom was born, supposedly in Virginia, in about 1815 as he appears on the 1850 DeKalb Co., Alabama census as being 35 years old, and Mariah/Maria was born in South Carolina in about 1817, appearing as being 33 years old in 1850. I know absolutely nothing else about Ransom's background, but Mariah might have been part Indian. She also was related to the Russells who were in Pontotoc Co. Anybody out there with any suggestions?

The Parents of Martha Ann CONNELLY

Born 15 Mar 1833, in Davidson CO., TN, but in Pontotoc CO., MS, by 14 Oct.1849, when she married John Milton AYCOCK. On the Pontotoc CO., MS, 1850 census there was listed an Owen CONNELLY as head of the household, with a wife named Martha, a baby, and a 12 year old, William Connelly, who, I think, must have been Owen's younger brother since Owen was 27 at the time. I found a marriage for Owen and Martha in Davidson CO., TN, in 1847, and feel sure he is my Martha's brother, and probably their parents had died by 1850, but still don't know who they were, or where they died, whether in TN, or in Pontotoc CO. There were various CONNELLYS in Davidson CO., TN, as early as 1803, including a William, but I can't find any records there listing Owen or Martha Ann. Any help or ideas on what I should do next would be greatly appreciated.

SAGE and SAPPINGTON

Hi! I'm looking for information on a Sage family. The parents died probably during the early to mid 1870's leaving two sons, William (b. 1867) and Steven (b. 1873). All the information I have is "William was orphaned before the age of ten, and then lived with his uncle named Sappington". I have found a "Jefferson Sage" who married "Susan Harrison" in 1866, which due to the date, are a possibility for parents for William and Steven, but can not find any other information. As the "Great Wall of Sage" continues to grow, any help would be appreciated!MIC

EVA MILLER SMITH

Eva Miller Smith was born Oct. 03, 1876 in Pontatoc, Mississippi. She was the daughter of William James Smith, born April 15, 1848 and Sarah Matilda Teeter, born Dec. 08, 1845 in North Carolina. At some point she and her family left Mississippi, moved to Alabama, and then migrated to Alley Community just outside of Kemp, Texas. She married William Andrew Thornton on March 28, 1894. They remained happily married until Dec. 10, 1963 when William Thornton passed away in Dallas, Texas. Eva Miller Smith had the following brothers and sisters (most birth and death dates unknown to me) Mary Smith, Buck Smith, Willie Smith, Maggie Smith (born July 08. 1886) and Lucy Smith.

Eva Miller Smith (Thornton) was known by her great-grandchildren was "Mama Thornton". She enjoyed rocking in a cane-back rocking chair. She and William Andrew Thornton (Papa Thornton) told stories of coming to Texas by wagon train and being involved/or coming across the remains of Indian fights. Unfortunately, these stories are now lost. She had a sister named Lucy. She also had a sister named Willie who married William Andrew Thornton's brother, Jim Thornton.

WHO WERE THE PARENTS OF WILLIAM C. VAUGHN?

William C Vaughn married Sarah Smith on June 04, 1854 in Pontotoc. According to the 1870 and 1880 censuses, he was born in Kentucky around 1832. I have been unable to find him on the 1850 or 1860 Pontotoc censuses. The 1850 census could have been very helpful, because he most likely would

have been living with his parents, but I have had no luck. William and Sarah's children were; Joseph, Nancy Ann (married Josephus Dillard),Sarah Francis (Fannie) (married Alexander Montgomery), Andrew (married Mary A. Montgomery), Rose, James Luis (married Rebecca Long), and Harriet. Apparently, William remarried between 1870 and 1880 to Martha Ann Mauldin and their children were; Richard B (married Alice ?), and Lucy (married Logan Montgomery). William probably died between 1880 and 1900. If anyone has information on this line or may know where William was buried, please contact me.

JAMES RAY WOOD IN CAMPGROUND CEMETERY

Here's one. My gggg/grandfather James Ray Wood lived about a mile from and his family attended Campground Church. We have been through the cemetery several times and can't locate his grave or

marker. Since James Ray died in Jan 1856 it has probably been demolished by time and weather. Also he is not listed on the Pontotoc or Campground cemetery listings.

Now, here's the rub. James Ray's daughter Mary Ann Wood married Stephen Callaway and had a son named Richard who had a daughter, Rozelle Callaway, who married a Wax in Pontotoc. In a "Wood" publication I saw a note written by Rozelle Wax which related the information from James Ray's marker. Rozelle either saw the marker or information recorded from the marker.

One more item: James Ray's estate papers lists cost for drayage to the cemetery plus costs for stones so he is not buried on his farm. My question is: Somewhere, is there written information about WHO was buried in Campground Cemetery other than the official cemetery listing? This is long and drawn out. I hope someone on the list can help.

DISAPPEARANCE OF 8 WORTHY CHILDREN

My brick wall in Pontotoc Co has been the disappearance of 8 Worthy children.

They were the children of Greenbury Worthy and Elizabeth Perry Worthy. After both parents had died by 1856, the children went to live with Elizabeth's parents', Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Frances) Perry, who lived in Cherry Creek, Pontotoc Co, MS . But only the two youngest children appear on the 1860 census with Jeremiah and Elizabeth (several online transcriptions show the last name as Peny rather than Perry). The others were still there - somewhere - because John Fleming Worthy and Asa Worthy both signed up for the CSA from Pontotoc Co. What happened to the other 2 brothers who'd have also been old enough to join the CSA? Where did his sisters go? Who'd they marry? By 1870 only the youngest child, James, is living with Jeremiah and Elizabeth.

Sarah A -b 1839

Fleming John -b 28Nov1839

Jackson -b 1841

Levi A -b 1842

Asa A -b 1845

James M -b 1857

John was in the 2nd Regt Miss Inf Co I -Enlisted 30Apr1861 from Cherry Creek, Pontotoc MS -capt 3Jul1863 Gettysburg - capt on furlough

16Feb1864 Pontotoc MS. Signed Oath of Allegiance in 1865. Family lore

from several different sources says that he killed a drunk Yankee soldier who was threatening his grandmother while on horseback either in

the house or on the porch (that would make more sense). To avoid

Yankee retribution, John fled to Texas and never returned to MS. He married in Texas in 1868.

Asa was in the 27th MS Co C and/or 41st MS INF,. Co F, The " Pontotoc Grays". Asa wrote John a letter saying he'd join John in Texas as soon as he was discharged - but never arrived and never sent another letter.

The names Asa, Jackson, Levi and John Flemming also appear in Georgia and Alabama, but would be in the children's grandparents' generation. They appear to be very early settlers in that area - and were there long before Greenberry married in South Carolina and began his family.
