Toccopola College was organized 1867 with W. B. Gilmer as the first president. He served in CSA, and when the war ended, he returned to his home in Toccopola where he immediately made plans to begin an academy for the education of boys and girls. He was associated with the school until 1890. This home stood close to the school.
