      Amite County
    • Amite County Historical and Genealogical Society Recently Formed

    • Liberty, Mississippi - November 1, 2004
The Amite County Historical and Genealogical Society of Mississippi was organized on July 23, 2004. Its purpose and objectives are to promote interest in the history of places, events, and families of Amite County; collect and preserve local historic treasures, including family histories; and educate our community about its unique heritage. One of the first Confederate monuments was erected in the county seat of Liberty in 1871 as a memorial to its native sons who lost their lives during the Civil War. Some famous historical residents included Gail Borden, creator of condensed milk, and Dr. Tichenor, inventor of a medicinal remedy of the same name.
Of special interest is the upcoming Bicentennial Celebration of the founding of Amite County in February 1809, when it was divided out of Wilkinson County, Mississippi. President Joey H. Wall is an enthusiastic proponent of publishing an updated county history, re-vitalizing the Little Red School House Museum, and establishing historical home tours. Other founding officers include William Greg Barron, vice president, Sue Clark Severson, secretary, and N. Gay Blalock, treasurer.
It is an exciting time to become involved in preserving and celebrating the history of Amite County. Anyone interested in helping the Society move forward on its historical and genealogical objectives is welcome to join. For additional information, or to become actively involved, submit annual dues of $15 per person or $25 per family; mail inquiry to Amite County Historical and Genealogical Society, P. O. Box 2, Liberty, Mississippi, 39645.

SMITH COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY PUBLISH FAMILY HISTORY BOOK

A special hardback bound publication, "Smith County, Mississippi and Its
Families, 1833-2003" is now available that is devoted to past and present
families, communities, businesses, organizations, schools, and churches. The
book is a result of three years work by the Smith County Genealogical
Society and contains individual contributions for 580 individual family and
military veteran histories as well as write-ups for past and present
communities, businesses, organizations, churches, and schools.

Charlotte Webb, President of the Smith County Genealogical Society, says the
book is an effort to collect and preserve important historical and family
information. Each item in the book was contributed by someone with ties to
or knowledge of Smith County, and each item is presented in their own words.
Many contributions included photographs. This book will prove very valuable
to those researching their Smith County roots and connections, or to those
who just have an interest in Smith County. Charlotte added that there will
undoubtedly be some people who will be disappointed that their histories
were not included, but the Society had for two years asked for and solicited
    contributions for this book.

Copies of the book can be purchased from the Smith County Genealogical
Society for 40.00 + $5.00 shipping. Request and payment can be sent to:
Smith County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 356, Raleigh, MS 39153. Be sure
to indicate that payment is for the "Smith County, Mississippi and Its
    Families, 1823-2003" publication.
