Union Baptist Church met in conference Saturday before 3rd Lords Day in May. Prayer. Call for reference.
Call for reference. Committee on case of Bro. Malone reports: Your committee met pursuant to
adjournment. After consulting with Bro. Ray he acknowledges he has probably been hasty and rather
inconsiderate in prefering his charge against Bro. Malone, inasmuch as (as before stated to the church)
things he has told has evidently not been none of more serious character than others would have done (his
feelings having had more to do in the matter than he thought possible) and that he has probably done Bro.
Malone a wrong and therefore makes this statement.  Bro. Malone frankly acknowledged he had doubtless
been guilty of telling exaggerated tales for amusements and pastime, and is therefore willing to receive Bro.
Ray’s statement & acknowledgment. We consequently see

no cause of non-fellowship between the brethren.

Whitten, viz:
Union church, apl. 17, 1871. Your comt. after spending a whole day in the investigation of evidence for the
different parties, in the difficulty pending between the Rev’d Marion Ray on the one part and the Breth.
James E. Ray & Jefferson Powell on THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE WAS UNDESIFERABLE.
1ST. That the brethren having a supposed Legacy in Tenn. by the death of their grandfather legally
empowered Brother Marion Ray to proceed to Tenn. & negociate their interest. 2nd. That Bro. M. Ray did
this so far as we know to their satisfaction. 3rd. That on his return home, Bro. Ray failed to report in form
what he had done in the premises & did not at once pay over to the Legatees moneys which he had
contracted for and collected. Furthermore that he, Bro. Ray, used on several occasions hasty and irritating
language to the parties. We therfore find him chargeable with great wrong.1st. As an attorney he should
have reported the work he had done without delay.
2nd. As an attorney he should have paid over all the moneys sollected for the parties.
3rd. As a Bro. and a minister of the gospel of Christ, he should not have indulged in a bad Spirit, nor used
any provoking or reproachful language. We therfore believe that he should be admonished & make open and
frank acknowledgement to the Legatees and to the church, when we feel he should be exonerated from
further charge.
Your comt. beg leave to report further that Breth. James F Ray & Jefferson Powell on their part, instead of
demanding of Bro. Ray in a business-like manner, or in a brotherly spirit to report what he had done for
them wrote letters of inquiry to negociating and interested parties in Tenn., thereby opening the way for
provocation, and soliciting testimony against Bro. Ray before they knew what he could or would say in his
own defense. These breth. too in talking about the matter seemed to lose sight of the spirit of Christ. We
therfore think they should feel adomonished & should frankly acknowledge their error to the church.
Lastly as these brethren have all gone contrary to Gospel order in the outset of their difficulty and thereby
brought great reproach on the Church, it is now due to them selves as Christian brethren & due to the
church that they agree to cease their strife & love on another. All of which is submitted.
Went into election of Delegates for Union meeting. Resulted in the choice of breth. M M. Ray, & J. Finche

Union Church met in confernce on Saturday before 3rd Sabbath in August. Called Bro. L. D. Adams to act
as Moderator. Prater by Bro. Adams. Upon calling for unfinished business the following protest was made.
We a majority of the members present in confernce assembled, set 3rd sat. Aug., Do hereby protest
against the action of the call confernce in the restoration of Bro. M. Ray, for the following reasons:
1. He failed to make acknowledgement to Brethren Ray & Powell.
2. His acknowledgement to the church was general and did not specify any sorrow for particular charges
alleged against him.
3. He did not promise to bury his strife & love the brethren as Christ had loved him.
4. His restoration was made at an irregular time & not at the conference for regular trial when we would
have been present.
5. After his restoration, which was irregular, he distinctly and defyantly stated that he must be honest, that
the church did wrong to send the committee inquiring why he demanded his letter of dismission & that he
was hurt with the church.
6. We believe that Bro. Ray should be delivered to Satan for the destruction of the flesh & we want him to
satisfy us that have done wrong.
Wherefore after considering the case the church rescinded her act of 5th Sabbath in July as invalid, on the
grounds stated in the protests & appointed Bro. A. W. Whitten to see Bro. Ray & notify him of the action of
the church today, & request him to be with us at our next regular meeting on Saturday before 3rd Sabbath in
September. Church decided to continue the case to next regular meeting. Adj.

Whereas Bro. <. Ray has long since handed his certificate of membership in at Pleasant Grove

indignity and contenpt, by rasping us as a church, not only privately but publicly, & bringing up chrges
against us & complaining of having carried the church on his shoulders as long as he was going to - all of
which we think unjust and un christianlike.
Therefore resolved, that inasmuch as Bro. Ray to come forward either to establish his charges against him,
we do, with due reference to Pleasant Grove Church, declare non-fellowship for him, and also declare an
unwillingness to permit him to occupy our pulpit.  Reolved further, that we spread this on our church book,
