Burrows detachment of 43rd at Enterprise, MS; AWOL at last official muster 8/64; further service unclear [Note: Besides James, four other Russells served in Co. E. Four Russells, whose first names are illegible on the document, all of whom claimed to have served in the 43rd (presumably in Co. E) with James A. Russell, signed an affidavit in 1919 in furtherance of James' widow's obtaining a pension. These four Russells claimed that James "was a confedeate soldier" and that he "made a good and faithful soldier and did not desert said cause." This would be a ringing endorsement, were it not for the fact that all four Russells in Co. E were AWOL at the time of the last official muster 8/64 and that none have verified service beyond that date. In fact, two of the Co. E. Russells show up in Memphis 2/65 as verified deserters from the Confederate Army! Yet they swore up and down that both they and James were loyal to the Cause! Ah, mendacity!]
