Gibson was known as the father of
Methodism in Mississippi. He was born in 1776 in
South Carolina and died in 1804 at his
brother’s home in Warrenton, MS which was
south of Vicksburg’s future
location. His grave was moved to
the grounds of Crawford
Street Methodist Church in Vicksburg in
1938.
