the hopes of making it a bit easier to locate those "lost" or
missing persons in all our families that lived in the Shuqualak, Mississippi
area in the 1870 census.
This was the first census which listed all citizens, black and white. Below you will find two lists. One was made by C.B. Smith, who enumerated the area between the dates of July 13 and July 20. The other was made by A.J. Simmons between the dates of July 5 and July 17.
It appears that the two men split the district, as the "Smith" list begins with the neighbors to the last of the list which "Simmons" made. Each man began his list as "household #1" which makes it a bit harder to understand, until we realize that they had split the area, one working "away" from the other.
The following information was obtained from microfilm. At times the names were difficult to decipher, but are offerred in good faith. Happy Hunting.
