Baptist Church records, Shuqualak.

Submitted and Transcribed by E. Annette Hudson Rose

This is a transcript of a carbon copy of a list made from a photo-static copy of subscribers to the Building Committee of the Baptist First Church of Shuqualak. I received my copy from Mrs. Hensliegh of Shuqualak after an inquiry to the Baptist Church was referred to her by Charlie Barrett, a Deacon of the Church. March, 1996.

It read as follows:

We the undersigned promise to the Building Committee the
amount annexed to our names on the first day of January
1858, for the purpose of building a Baptist First Church
of Shuqualak. In witness whereof we herein to set our
names with the amount annexed.

The Post Office for Shuqualak was established Feb. 25,1855. When the railroad "came along" the town was "born" and nearby communities "dried up", as their former residents moved on into the immediate area of Shuqualak. Samuel C. McNees donated a large portion of the land which "made up" the downtown area. S.C. McNees was related to the Greer, Haynes, Hudson and Beasley families listed above.
