Tate County Record, February 11, 1881
Mrs. M. A. Wiley died at eight o'clock February 10th, 1881, of Typhus-Malarial Fever at the residence of D. R. McCrackin, her boarding place. The death of Mrs. Wiley has spread a gloom over our town, and given a look of sadness to all faces. Possessed astutely of a strong and vigorous intellect which had received the finish that a pure, Christian training, and a liberal education can give, she was truly a noble woman. Her place in our community as a teacher in the public school and as an ornament to the social circle cannot be readily supplied. Her illness was of short duration lasting about a week and her death is a shock to us all as sudden as it is appalling. We feel assured, however, with all who knew her, that those who are left to mourn her loss are the only losers by this sad dispensation of a all wise Providence.
