38th MISSISSIPPI INFANTRY

I am searching for information on the 38th Mississippi Infantry for my Master's thesis. The companies of the 38th came from Holmes, Attala, Newton, Madison, Hinds, Claiborne, Copiah, Lawrence, Wilkinson, Pike, Marion, Hancock and some surrounding counties. The Officers of the 38th were Colonel Preston Brent of Pike County, Lt. Col. Walter L. Keirn of Holmes County, and Major Robert C. McCay of Claiborne County. I will gladly share information with anyone interested.

Jesse W. Bowman's second wife was CARA JANE STROUD m. in 1895. His brother MONROE BOWMAN married NEILY SMITH in 1894. Jesse and Cara's children were Katie who lived at Meadville as late as 1930; Lucy who married Johnny Stritman; Sallie; Charles; and Wesley. Can use any help I can get!!!

SC Revolutionary Soldier John RATCLIFF, Sr. b: 1758 m: 1784 SC Ann FIELD, daughter of SC Revolutionary War Capt. James FIELD. John Ratcliff, Sr. died 24 Jul 1840 in Saline Co., AR. John and Ann Field Ratcliff had eight children namely: James Ratcliff, Penelope Ratcliff PERKINS, Margaret Ann Ratcliff TERRELL, John Ratcliff, Jr., Elizabeth Ida Ratcliff BREWER, Zachariah Ratcliff, Theophilus Ratcliff, and Martha Ann Ratcliff DAVIS as documented on estate records in Saline CO., AR.

While residing in Franklin Co., MS John Ratcliff applied for Revolutionary War Pension as on record in Franklin County. He had served in Lanew's Company, Peter Horry's Regiment, under General Francis Marion "The Swamp Fox" in South Carolina. John and a relative Benjamin GOODSON another SC Revolutionary War Soldier attested to each other's service as on record in Franklin Co., MS. There was also a Samuel Ratcliff residing in Franklin along with them as noted on the 1820 census of Franklin Co., MS. John Ratcliff, Sr. had a sister Penelope Ratcliff WARREN who is also listed on the 1820 census. Many of the older sons of John Ratcliff, Sr. fought in the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. Our families' old letters (1840's-1870's) on specifically the RATCLIFF-TERRELL family. Will gladly exchange information on these families.
