Rutherford Cemetery

Janis Parttridge and her sister Mozelle Parttridge Chason found a cemetery that they had never visited. It is located about 1 mile northwest of theSandy Bayou Cemetery, Drew, Sunflower County. To get there, go to the Sandy Bayou Cemetery and continue down the Long Lake Road for 1/2 mile. Take a right turn on the Grittman Road and go 1/2 mile. The cemetery is located on the left, on the only mound in the area and overgrown with weeds taller than your head and vines entangled on the ground. One really must go there on purpose, climbing a high mound and being careful not to trip on the vines and roll down the mound.

We found only five graves, those being the Rutherford family plot, enclosed in an iron fence. The headstones are huge, at least five feet tall, made of marble and are square at the base, tapering toward the top. They are almost identical.

Rutherford Cemetery is now a Historical Monument! Thanks go to Janis Parttridge Sigler and her sister Mozelle Parttridge Chason for this wonderful accomplishment!
