Jefferson Flying Artillery

   Darden's Battery

aka Harper's Battery

Roster And Compiled Service Records

This roster is mainly composed from the nara micro film m269, rolls 94 and 95. other names and information have been added from the roster recorded by t. b. Hammett ( a former battery Sargent in the company ) found in the hammett papers at mississippi state university. these entries are in color. in addition under the last entry of some of the soldiers there are, added in bold letters, other units that they may have served with as recorded in the official roster of the Confederate Army.

It is important to note that neither of these rosters are complete.

The nara micro film contains information from the war records, both confederate and union, gathered and organized around the turn of the twentieth century. the confederate records are mostly in the form of muster rolls that were usually, but not always, recorded every two months. after the muster in roll for the Jefferson artillery in October of 1861, there was no muster roll recorded until may of 1862, a gap of over six months. Although other rolls for this company survived up through December of 1863, only the july- august muster of 1864 was recorded for the years 1864 and 1865. this makes a combined gap in the record of almost two years. so if one sees a notation under a soldier’s name that he was present on all muster rolls, the record only shows he was present on those surviving rolls after his enlistment. this gap in the record also means that those soldiers who may have enlisted and left the company during that time would not have their names recorded.
.
Sargent Hammett’s roster was written from memory many years after the war and he readily admitted that, although he remembered many of their faces, there were at least fifty names missing. in addition because of the difficulty of reading his handwriting and the difference in the spelling of some of the entries, it was impossible to enter some of the names while others had to be matched phonetically to the microfilm record.

In fact this problem exists, to some degree, in all three sources that were used for this roster. so if one is using a name for research, please remember to consider all possible spellings and mistakes that could have been made by the compilers, including this one.

Originally the men composing the battery were recruited from Mississippi in Jefferson, Adams and Claiborne counties. the record, however, shows that at the time of the surrender, in may of 1865, men from three other artillery companies, fighting in the western theater, had joined Darden’s battery.

The first consolidation came after the retreat from corinth, miss. when the confederate army was reorganized at tupelo, miss. in july of 1862. Auston’s Battery (Arkansas) was disbanded and about thirty men, described as mostly irish, were transferred into darden’s battery just before the kentucky campaign. this company seems to have been organized in the northeastern part of the state of arkansas near the towns of pitman’s ferry and pocahontas in the summer of 1861. it was associated with trigg’s battery with which it fought at the battle of shiloh.

The second company to join the battery was the Griffin Light Artillery (Georgia ) also known as King’s Battery and later as Scoggin’s Battery. this battery began organizing in the spring of 1862 with men from Spalding, Morgan , Pike and Upson counties. the consolidation took place in two phases. the first being after the battle of new hope church in early June of 1864 when the Georgians lost so many of their artillery horses that about half of their company was detailed to Darden’s battery. the second phase occurred in the winter of 1864-65, after the retreat from Nashville, Tennessee, where the Georgia company lost its guns and was down to about thirty survivors.

The third company was Ward’s ( Alabama ) Battery also known as Cruse’s Battery. this battery was put together by Capt. John J. Ward and mustered into the confederate service in October of 1862. most of the men came from the Huntsville and Athens area. it is not known if this battery was officially consolidated into the Jefferson artillery after the retreat from Nashville or just that some of the company were captured fighting along side the Jefferson artillery when Wilson’s cavalry captured Selma, AL. and Columbus GA. in the spring of 1865.

It should be remembered that not all of the men in Scoggin’s and ward’s batteries that may have fought with the Jefferson Artillery are recorded on this roster. the federals only recorded those men who were captured or surrendered. because there were no surviving muster rolls for the Jefferson artillery after august 1864, the men from Ward’s Battery and the Griffin Light Artillery who escaped capture at Selma, AL. and the fighting at Columbus,GA. and who did not rejoin the company before the general surrender at Citronelle, AL. were never shown to be in the unit.

If anyone has questions about this roster or has any information concerning the companies and men who served with the Jefferson artillery please e-mail me at jvaughan64@yahoo.com.
