Captain Jacob Guice

   Obituary

Submitted by Gerald & Tammy Westmoreland

Departed this life, at his residence in Jefferson County, Miss., on the 28th April 1852, Capt. JACOB GUICE.

It can be said of the deceased, that few men have lived to more purpose. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for twenty years, and he adored the Gospel of Christ. None who were acquainted with him could doubt his being, in every particular, an exemplary christian. So guarded were his actions, that he was never heard to engage in light and triffling conversation. When his physician attended, he said to him "You can apply your remedies, but I think the good Lord has said, 'It is enough, come up higher.'"

During his illness of a week, no murmur escaped his lips, but on every occasion his faith was expressed in the strongest terms that immortality, eternal life, was just before him.

As a citizen, he was punctual and honorable in all his business transactions. The vast concourse of people that assembled at his funeral gave evidence of the respect felt for him by the entire community.

As a husband and father, he was unexceptionable. His widow and children, though keenly afflicted, have much to console them in retrospecting his life and death. He lived the life of the righteous, and his end was peace.
