Jones Family Cemetery

Near the Sandtown community (located on private property)

This well maintained cemetery, located on land originally belonging to John Belton Jones Sr., dates from the mid-1850’s. The cemetery seems to still be in use, the latest burials being in the 1990’s. There are quite a few illegible stones, as well as several broken ones. Although there is no extant marker bearing his name, J.B. Jones Sr. is thought to be one of the earliest burials in this cemetery. Although named for the Jones family, the majority of those interred here are relatives of Mr. Jones wife, Lidia Johnson Jones. The Jones, Fords, Crocketts, Bassetts, and Kilpatricks buried here all are descendants of the William Johnson family of Dallas County, Alabama. Lidia Jones, Eliza Bassett, and Sarah Crockett were granddaughters of William Johnson who is buried in the Johnson family cemetery about six miles west of Selma. William Johnson fought in the Revolutionary War, his grave is marked with a military marker placed by the D.A.R.
