HUDSON, HUTSON, MCKNIGHT, WAIT posted by Diana Manley on Sunday, August 2, 1998

My g.g.g.grandparents were James Waite and Lousia J. McKnight born probably late 1830's and married around 1855 in Pontotoc Co. Miss. Their daughter Rebecca Jane Wait b. 1861 married Charles William Hudson(Hutson) b.1850's married 1881 in Pontotoc Co. Miss. In 1880 census I have found James Wait and family in Pontotoc Co. and 4 houses down Charles Hutson was living with the Mills family as a laborer. I have not yet found them in the 1870 or 1860 census in Pontotoc Co. Miss. There may also be a connection with Mills since Charles Hutson (Hudson) was staying with then in 1880. Also I believe that Louisa J. McKnight (Wait) had a brother named Robert. Any information would help. Thanks and I would be happy to share. Diana cedar_grove@neto.com

PERRY, STONE, WALKER posted by Rev. Robert E. Walker on Saturday, August 8, 1998

I am researching the family of John C. Walker who married Mary Stone Aug. 9, 1857 in Pontotoc County. John entered the Civil War at Serepta and was wounded shortly afterward in the battle of Collierville, Tn. He was carried to a Union Hospital in Memphis, treated and released. His wife, Mary Stone Walker and young son, Warren and one other lady traveled to his side in Memphis by ox cart. They settled and bought land in Memphis. Mary had sold the land near Randolph for Confederate money - worthless but she didn't know. I need to know who John C. Walkers parents were. Also, Mary Stone's parents. Will share information.

All of the above are listed in the 1850 census in Pontotoc Cty. Dr. Thomas Clay Williamson, DOB 1827 in AL, trained with Dr. Dorsey, also born in AL. Dr. Williamson's mother was Sabrita "Sabra" Dulaney; his father was George Williamson, born in Ireland. Dr. W. married Rhoda "Rhody" Naomi Cornwell Matthews (widow of Edward James Matthews, also of Pontotoc Cty); two of their children were born in Lee County: Maximillian Wade Williamson in 1868 (but he also said he was "from" Water Valley) and Rhoda Pearson Williamson in 1869 and, one, Thomas Dorsey Williamson, in Prairie Cty, Ark in 1864. The family moved in the early 1880's first to Pickens, now Marshall Cty, Chickasaw Nation, IT (Ok), Rhody died there in 1887. Both boys married in Carter Cty, Chickasaw Nation, IT. Rhoda Pearson married Lucien Anderson Hathcock in Sunset, Wise Cty, TX, in 1884. Everybody in the family then homesteaded, founding, essentially, Brown, Pottawatomie Cty, OK. in about 1891. Does anyone know when and why they left MS and went West and if there is any Indian blood in any of these families? (The McDonalds and Caldwells are also from Pontotoc, but they're on the other side of my family- we know they came to TX and stayed for a good while before going on to OK) Thanks, Mary Lou Branson, Ft Worth

Looking for information on Levi Newton HILL (born 1835 in SC) and his wife Lucinda PENSON (b. 1833 in SC). They married about 1857 in SC and were in Pontotoc County, MS before 1860 when they appear on the federal census for Pontotoc County. They are said to have moved with other Hill and/or Penson relatives. Levi and Lucinda Hill had at least 2 children born there between 1859-1873 when they moved to Arkansas. I believe they may have had other children who died in the county. Levi enlisted for the Confederate Army at Fredonia, Mississippi on 26 April 1862 by Capt. Smith for a period of 3 years. He was a corpl. in Company E., 43 Reg't of Mississippi. He was taken prisoner at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 4 July 1863 and released on 11 July 1863. Any information on possible relatives and/or infant or small children they may have lost in Miss. would be a great help!
