I just copied from your 'Civil War' site the Roll of Militia in Pontotoc Co: 5th Reg't, 1st Brigade enr. & drafted 20, Feb. 1863. I found JOSEPH YATES listed in the County Mil., Randolph Beat, L.P. Conlee, Lt.-43 men. What I need to know is why is there a county mil. needed in the middle of the civil war? And how do I determine what happened to this 5th Reg't, 1st Brigade? Was this mil. employed as part of the regular army troops? I am trying to find out what Regiment Joseph Yates ended up in. Thanks!

SHERBIT, SHURBET posted by Larry Shurbet on Monday, March 1, 1999

The Assistant Coordinator of Prentiss County said I should place this Query here in Pontotoc County. My Mother and I have been searching for any and all information regarding "Henry Middleton? Shurbet." H.M.S. resided in Prentiss and enlisted in the confederacy in 1862 in 19th Infantry, CO-K. We have copies of documents that show this but we are unable to find much else. On his military papers his name was usually spelled "Sherbit", however, there are different spellings as I'm sure you know. He served at Richmond VA, at Chimbrazo Hospital as a Guard, and later in Columbus, and return to Prentiss at the close of the Civil War. H.M.S. was born 1814 in SC, and died and is buried in Prentiss in 1892. He was my G-G-G Grandfather. His Son, to whom I descend, was Zadus Brister Shurbet. One Genealogist suggests that he was a spy for the Confederacy, and suggests that that is the reason we are unable to find much information. If you can be of any assistance, Mom and I would sure appreciate your help. Your Heritage Friend, Larry

COTTON, DEASON, DUKE, HAWKINS, MORRISON, PHILPOT posted by Becky Deason- Eubanks on Sunday, March 28, 1999

I am looking for information on my great-great- grandmother, Mary Ann DUKE (born May 15, 1834 in GA). She married Josiah Deason in Pontotoc County, February 9, 1854. This marriage presents a strange mystery for me to solve. I have a copy of their marriage license, however, on the 1860 Calhoun County census, Josiah (26 years of age) appears as the head of household, with a Rebecca Deason (24 years old) and a Benjamin Deason (10 years old). These two people are not members of his immediate family, and the names are not found again. They may be cousins, but I don't know how they connect. At first, I thought Mary Ann Duke-Deason may have died. But, she reappears with Josiah on the 1870 AR census and they begin having children???? Unverified family information says that Josiah and Mary Ann had a daughter in Pontotoc or Calhoun in 1856, two years after their marriage, but she died in 1857. Other than family stories, I can not find any evidence of the birth of a daughter. Anyone with information on Mary Ann Duke, PLEASE let me know. Thanks in advance.

I am the daughter of James W. Smith. Son of Nora Smith, which died in 1980 I believe from complications of pneumonia. My dad is not a very good historian and I am looking for relatives that I knew as a child. My father had some brain surgery in 1984 and I have not seen anyone since before that. I know I have cousins Jackie and Ann Russell, and their children Stacy and Gene. Stacy I heard is married and she should be about 30 or so, Gene I'm not sure but I think is married also and is older. I would like to get ahold of Stacy. I know they all went to New Hope Baptist Church when I was little. If you have any info please respond. Thank You, Missy (Smith)
