Bumgart, Sarah

Original query from Anita Stephenson asked about Sarah Bumgart born ca. 1856 and died ca. 1940. Information about birthplace, burial and life being sought. (Rebgal62@charter.net)

Further correspondence revealed:
Sarah had been married to John G. Bumgart at one time.
Their children: John H. (Ms Anita’s grandfather), William, James, Gus, Charles, Hattie, Myrtle and Ethel. {birth order not specified}

After talking to Mrs. Jasper (Nettie) Bumgart in Derma, Ms. Nettie said that James/Jim was her father-in-law and he was buried at the Crossroads Cemetery, south of Calhoun City. That cemetery transcription is on the MSGenweb site. She said that Charles/Charlie was buried in the Calhoun City Cemetery which is on the eastern side of Calhoun City across from the 2nd Baptist Church. She also said that some of the family had returned to Alabama.

Anita replied that her grandfather, John H. Bumgart was buried in Alabama. She also has a marriage reference to Gus Bumgart to Sarah Fowler and her Grandmother’s bible with a reference to Thorton. At one time the family lived in Lawrence Co. TN at Westpoint. Most of the children were born there.

She has a 1910 Census showing John G. Bumgart. The family was in Westpoint, TN and the census record is under BARNGART. She has also found a marriage license between Sarah Flower {Fowler in previous correspondence} and Guss Bumgard.

In 1920, Sarah Bumgart was living in Russellville, Alabama and listed as a widow on the census. The death site of John G. Bumgart is not certain.

In 1917, John H. Bumgart filed out a WWI draft card and stated that he had a mother and 3 brothers as dependents so it is thought that John “Gus” died sometime between 1910-1916.

It is not known when Sarah Bumgart moved to Calhoun Co. MS. Did Jim Bumgart move to Calhoun County first and then she moved in with them. The 1930 Calhoun Co. Census has not been locally indexed so has not been searched yet. She was NOT living with John H. Bumgart in 1930.
