Good Citizen Dies At Sarepta

Mrs. Mattie Leachman Yancy Died Sunday- Services At Sarepta Baptist Church- Mrs. Mattie Pearl Leachman Yancy, age 76, passed away at her home in the Sarepta community on Sunday, March 10, 1957.

Funeral services were held from Sarepta Baptist Church, of which she was a member, on Monday afternoon, March 11, at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. James Henry, assisted by Revs. Buford Roane and A.F. Brasher, with interment in Sarepta cemetery. Pallbearers were C.W. Yancy, E.H. Yancy, S.T. Webb, Morris Edwards, Marvin Murphree and Jesse L. Yancy, Jr. Pryor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Yancy was born at Sarepta June 9, 1880. She was the daughter of Green Leachman and Julia Helms Leachman. She lived her entire life in the Sarepta community. She married R.A. Yancy, who survives her, 56 years ago. A member of the Missionary Baptist Church and a devout Christian, she was also interested in the civic and moral life of her community and was active in many phases of community undertakings. She was a loyal and devoted wife and mother and was a friend worth having.

Reared, educated and married in historic Sarepta- one of the county’s oldest communities- she lived a life of usefulness throughout the many years as a resident of that community. Her many relatives and friends were grieved at her death, but are consoled by the knowledge that she lived a life of service to her fellowman, and was faithful to her trust as a wife, a mother, a neighbor and as a follower of the Saviour.

She is survived by her husband; by a son, R.E. Yancy, of Sarepta; by three sisters, Mrs. Anna Taylor, of Bruce, Mrs. George Logan, of Pittsboro, and Mrs. John W. Simms, of Memphis, Tenn.; by one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
