Born May 28, 1843, at Gainesville, Junction, Mississippi. Enlisted on July 8, 1861 in Dallas County Texas in the 24th Fourth Mississippi Infantry. There is a lengthy biography of the soldier. In the Tennessee campaign, Cocke was the Orderly Sergeant. By the time the regiment got to Franklin, TN on November 30, 1864, Cocke was wounded in the night charge made by the 24th Mississippi. Cocke was reported to have been shot in the skull which entered above the right eye, the ball went around the skull and exited the back of the skull.
At Nashville on December 16, 1864, Cocke states, “It was the second day of the battle {at Nashville}, that we lost two color bearers, and I was asked to take the colors, which I did, but over the urgent protest of my comrades and company, and I carried same from this place to Tupelo, and also filled my position as Orderly Sergeant.”
Richard Hunley Cocke, Sr. died February 21, 1921, and is buried in Wellington, Collingsworth, Texas. Del Thomasson
